2017 – Montréal

During the last reading week of my Masters degree I thought it would be a good plan to take my first train-only trip. I had never used the Canadian Via Rail before so I took this opportunity to try. I left Toronto on Tuesday, Feb 21 alternating between reading Lost Nowhere on the train, and listening to Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. In one ride I was able to finish the audiobook which gave me a sense of accomplishment. Upon arriving in Montreal, naturally, I explored 2 used bookstores, one chain bookstore “Paragraphe” (twice), and the McGill bookstores. From the used bookstore called “The Word” I purchased Anne Sexton and Robert Lowell books. I felt in a ‘confessional poetry’ mood and the bookstore owner had so many of their collections (I also own all of the Plath corpus). I also got some poem collection from Owen and Sassoon. I find confessional poetry and war poets to have many things in common. I had some time to do homework for my class on librarianship (information behaviour). I also bought this book of literary lists which I had time to sit down in a cafe Van Houtte to fill out. I returned on Saturday, February 25th reading Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier on the train (which got delayed on its return so I got about 60% of the way through the book by the time I got home). I also had it on audiobook which was nice to have to compliment the ride.
